It's an overcast Wednesday morning, and we all know what that means: new PS5 firmware! Sony has just released the latest system software update for its current-gen console, weighing in at just over 1GB in size. So, what's the scoop on this one? What does the newest PS5 firmware actually do? Good news: it's a big one.
After a short stint in beta, this PS5 firmware update introduces lots of new features and improvements, including:
- Game Library gamelists (folders)
- Support for 1440p resolution
- Improvements to Game Base
- Improvements to Game Help
- Better access to in-progress Activities
- Compare 3D audio and regular stereo
This new firmware makes a couple of long-requested additions, so hopefully you're all pretty happy with this update. You can read a few more details over on the PS Blog. Will you be making use of these new and improved features? Let us know in the comments section below.

What does support for 1440p bring to the table? What will it change?
@AFCC Probably for people that use a PC monitor for their PS5
@AFCC If you use a display running at 1440p resolution, the PS5 now supports that natively.
@AFCC nothing lol.
Update seems meh, I have not much a reason to use my p5
This is great news as a buddy of mine uses PC monitor for his gaming PC and PS5.
More options for the consumer is always a good move
Folder "playlists" will finally come handy, just turned on my ps5 and this firmware download
Would like the full Discord announcement to arrive. Also, can’t remember whether it’s hardware related so can’t be changed or they said it could come in the future but will we ever see the ability to ‘rest’ a game while playing another.
Aware you can do it if you stream a game while playing an installed game but streaming is rough. I use wired connection and it’s still laggy.
VRR is sadly not supported at 1440p Resolution
sRGB, as in without HDR10/20/uncomfy and downscaled xRGB; might be a white lie of standard s-video-like 4K signal and bitstreaming method techniques.
Nice to see folder playlists.
Personally ive never seen the point in buying a machine designed for 4k output and displaying it on a 2k monitor, but it doesnt hurt that people who need or want this can now do it.
@AFCC A lot of PC monitors with 1440p panels (which is a fine resolution for a 24” screen) support 120 fps input but don’t have HDMI 2.1 ports, which - until now - meant one had to use the downscaled 1080p output from the PS5 and had it upscaled by the monitor, resulting in subpar picture quality.
@Quintumply does that mean that selecting 1440P res in the PS5 allows games that target 4K60FPS to be more likely to achieve the 60FPS?
i.e. its a good way to get the promised land of 60 (or even 120) FPS, by outputting 14040p, without having to drop all the way to 1080p?
Or is it that games would have to be coded for such, as they may still be trying to render 4K (and thus have their FPS challenged) and then the PS5 just downscales it to 1440p for presentation?
Does the PS4 pro support 1440p ?
@BartoxTharglod Yep, says so in the fine print of the Blod Post lol
@lindos As far as I understand it, this has no bearing on the performance of games at all. It's just another video output option for those using a 1440p monitor. As @Voltan says, instead of the game being displayed at 1080p and then upscaled, you get a nice crisp image.
This sort of tech talk isn't really my area, though!
@Would_you_kindly it upscales it from 1080p
Nice.
Also, Remote Play app has been updated to allow background streaming. So finally you can exit the app for a bit and not have to reconnect.
@itsfoz They have never said they will allow you to rest multiple games as far as i'm aware. To be honest if they implemented loading your last save from the homescreen more clearly (as they discussed) this wouldn't be all that important. E.g. You can load into Spider-man from the PS5 homescreen in less than 5 seconds. If all games offered this as standard it would be great.
As good as quick resume is on Xbox when it works it doesn't work on all games and sometimes fails.
I use a 1440p 165HZ monitor for gaming, and now I'm not forced to play in 1080p.
It's a huge visual improvement, and seems to have gotten a little better since beta as well. It's a great software update.
@AFCC some people have monitors that only support up to 1440 , and not 4k , so now they can go to 1440.
Too bad VRR support is still locked behind HDMI 2.1 it would do wonders for Sony to enable it in HDMI 2.0 at least for 1080p and 1440p outputs.
@lindos no
If you play a game that has a 1440p option then it'll render natively at 1440p. But, if it has an option then the option will also be on a 4k TV, so the 1440p mode will be identical to the 1440p option on a 4k TV - same performance.
If you select 1440p at a system level but the game only supports 4k or 1080p, then you'll still get a downsampled 4k or upscaled 1080p - it'll just be downscaled to 1440p and not 1080p.
The only time we see a handful of games get a nice performance bump is if you set the system settings to 1080p as it forces a system level 1080p output. Most games don't have this hidden mode anymore but games like Atelier Ryza 2 swap from 4k/30 to a stable 1080p/60.
I like being able to compare the 3D audio.
@themightyant Ah fair enough but yes, they need to fully flesh out that feature for sure. Also, on the games that do allow you to jump in when there’s multiple modes available (such as a sports game - F1 for instance) it often doesn’t display all modes so it’s really hit and miss what you can jump into.
You can’t even put the folders on the main screen, what a joke
@itsfoz The point is jumping into the last save quickly. Similar to what quick resume does. Or possibly a shortcut to the home menu, skipping all the logo BS or a pull out menu that devs can offer additional options/modes. But that starts getting a LOT more complicated and won't suit all games that require several settings to be chosen. But It's a quick start feature and shouldn't have all options.
themes is a done deal ain’t it ?
What’s the point of reporting if you don’t actually report and just rehash press release? Gamelists are stupid and worthless. Why Sony removed folders in the first place is stupid. Why they just won’t simply add them back is even dumber. Being only able to create a Gamelist in the Game Collections section and then not only for games installed on the PS and not be able to put that list on the home page…..what is the point?
The previous OS gui was simple and elegant. I don’t understand everyone’s fascination with cluttered menus. I don’t play games for menus. Sony trying to emulate the Xbox gui is stupid. I wish there was a simple mode that removed all that feeds and things from the home page and ALLOWED the user to fully customized what they want to see.. But again why can’t they simply just add the create folder option back. Just so stupid
@Musharna MidStation 5 still disappointing 2 years later
@nomither6 Themes don't fit with their clean aesthetic and custom art from the developer for each game tile. Yes, not coming back without a huge change to the whole UI.
That's a good thing in MY opinion, but I realise some people like to make their dashboard ugly Trololololo
(Honestly choice is good, but I understand WHY they don't add it)
@themightyant what custom art ? it’s just 1 tab that shows the background of the game like the ps3 did . back then developers actually did show their art by releasing official custom themes of their games . this is actually a regression , like many things about MidStation 5
@BartoxTharglod
Yeah. Sony definitely phones in stuff like that. VRR should've been to the freesync standard but nope. Sony just did the laziest thing other than just not adding it.
@nomither6 how often are you even gonna see your custom ps5 theme while switching between games that display their own background. It's pointless to be honest to have a theme. How much time do you even spend on the homescreen anyway? I'm there literally 10 seconds most times... And you clearly want people to react to your midstation 5 comment desperately I see... Go play a pc. There's always room for improvements yes but I've got both and happy with both
@ah41 Sony Didn't "remove" folders from the PS5, that feature never existed. The OS for the PS5 is not port of the PS4 OS.
I understand the sentiment, that it was a feature that existed in a previous console made by Sony; so why isn't it a feature that exists on this console (and I agree, I enjoyed folders) but you have to understand that the PS4 had an average attachment rate of 9.6 games. That means that the average player owned less than 10 games over the life of the console. The average player doesn't have any use for folders (as they likely won't have more than a handful of games installed at any one time).
What I am trying to say is that the reason these features didn't exist at launch is that when allocating resources and deciding which features get implemented now, and which have to wait, they have to focus on features that will benefit the average player before they can put many resources into the features that only a relatively small handful will make real use of.
With all of that said; I am disappointed in the terrible UI design on the PS5; from trophies, to folders, it seems like they just didn't put in much effort.
Yay Folders, how I have missed thee.
Seems like a pretty solid update, I am pretty happy with the PS5 OS as it is and I don't expect miracles in terms of what can be added.
I really wish they some day will overhaul the main trophy UI.
It has not added folders.....
2 big things they need to do to game lists
Allow us to pin them to the home menu!
I miss the “now” screen of the PS4. The PS5 seems a much lonelier experience without that.
The small row of icons at the top is massive waste of screen space.
I liked the folder system on PS4 very much. The PS5 Version of that is sadly useless to me. I should be able to see those on the homescreen.
Sometimes I really wonder what kind of person would make such strange decisions regarding those features -.-'
@Chaotic_Goat totally agree so folders should be on main screen
on ps5 everything takes more button presses and more menus than it did on ps4
@Chaotic_Goat that's because they're for your download list, which actually serves a purpose unlike being on the home screen for already downloaded games.
Got excited when I heard gamelists/folders. Then checked it out and realised it's rubbish! Oh well.
@ thedevilsjester.. Guess I wasn’t clear in my statement. I know folders were never in PS5 gui, when I said removed I meant from the design concept. I don’t know that I agree with your assessment though. 10 games over the life time of the console seems low, but regardless. Given the PS5 focus on digital and PS4 compatibility you take that 10 games from the PS4 and potential 10 more over the life of PS5……..
I can see and agree with how some features wouldn’t be priority at the start, but folders aren’t rocket science. It is a basic programming function. How would it be more complicated then this gamelist thing which I personally find useless. The only reason I have an interest in folders in the first place is that Sony (along with Microsoft and the rest) are pushing these cluttered interfaces that more ad based than being user friendly. I don’t need my console to be a social hub and I don’t need all the animations and social feeds. I want a simple clean efficient interface to get me to what I want quickly.
This isn’t a matter of resources as much as it’s about advertising. If I’m allowed to customize my home page to what I want then they can’t reach me through ads. My PS4 home page had all those feeds and stuff that I couldn’t delete in a folder called junk so I never saw them. And then had a couple of genre based folders. It was quick clean efficient and non-intrusive. Because of this constant barrage of stuff I don’t want I don’t even have my PS5 connected now as that’s the only way to turn it off.
This is just my personal preference. And my primary gripe is that there isn’t an option for a simple clean mode. Let me decide what I want to see and what I want on my home page. I think the PS5 OS/gui is a major step backwards. Always thought the PS OS was a lot better because of its simplicity
@Arkham24601 Lets be honest you really just want to show off your latest trophies in the feed like ps4 😀
@Gdfrew are you new to playstation or what ? themes have been a thing since the damn ps3 over 10 years ago and was available day one on ps4 because it’s became a staple , and you’re really arguing with me as to why i have a problem with it ? i don’t care what you do with your system and i don’t care about your preferences , im idle all the time on my home screen and each theme was more than just a background , it had specific sounding keynotes , custom icons , and their own music ; so it more than proved it’s worth . people like to customize and personalize things to their liking , how is that hard to understand .
@Quintumply I'm not sure if my PS5 updated to this today yet, didn't get a notification or notice anything different, but it did ask to update my DualSeanse, which I did, and now the light on the controller seems to be 1 spot rather than the full bottom of the touchpad, hopefully to conserve the battery. 🤷
I just want true folders like in playstation 4, and dolby atmos since I have home theatre system that support that.
@Quintumply so no mention of the PS4 update version 10.00 then?
Includes improvements to the zoom facility on the built in web browser (a PlayStation with a web browser? How exotic!) and also some improvements to remote play
@nomither6 yep I had the last of us 2 theme for the ps4 when it made a little more sense as games didn't have their own artwork taking over the full screen. I've had every playstation...you idle on the main screen all the time for what purpose? Play a game ffs I bet you start your car up and just sit in it all the time for no apparent reason.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@tomassi Yep. I tried them in the beta, and tried to give feedback at how awful they were.
The ONLY positive thing I have to say about PS5 "folders" is that you can add a game to more than one. That's something of a benefit over the PS3 and PS4 implementations, I would say. But pretty much every other single thing about this implementation is worse. It's awful. Adding games is painful, just getting to them is painful, there's no sorting once you're there...it's just bad and I hate it.
Proper folders would be good but it's not something I lose sleep over, then again,I don't play multiple games concurrently so I can see why bothers others. 1440 I'm happy to see, should help frame rates when needed. For me FPS > Res every day. I wish they would add Dolby Atmos speaker support. Sony's "3D sound" is fine but it doesn't compare to a full Atmos set-up
Still no better USB DAC support for those of us who want to use hifi amps then...?
@riceNpea so basically what the ps5 was doing before it added this update , not that it really matters because I don't think they're are many games that use 1440p textures so they'll be upscaling anyway lol
The folders are ridiculous lol
I want to do folders for my installed games...not my 900 owned games in library wtf lol
@AFCC
I absolutely agree.
Another missed opportunity by Sony to sort out the atrocious mess that is the UI.
We need proper folders, not this half arsed effort.
We need themes or at least background colours...the effing grey is depressing.
The PS4 UI was far better than this muck we have had to put up with for 2 years...
Sort it out Sony...
Can't be that hard to put in actual folders on home screen, or implement themes. It just seems like they're trickling out little updates to make it look like they're hard at work...
@Musharna sell it to a soul that will infact play it and enjoy it rather then cry about getting updates..
The comments seem evenly divided between those who want the PS4 UI and those that want a Windows desktop. At least the two sides can agree that petulance and vitriol are the appropriate responses to not liking the home screen on a game console.
@Amnesiac a desktop screen is nothing but folders & a console is just a specified PC or desktop .
This update prove what we already know. Every employer who was involved in making ps5 UI should be fired. Today we got another,brand new proof! You create THE most wanted function for ps5 (being able to add games into folders) and You do what? No thumbnail can be moved inside the Gamelist, also positions of a Gamelists can not be changed. So,i assume i need pencil and paper to make a drawing how all should look like and then starts working on it? About mentioning "internet browser" that we can use zoom now,is irrelative since we do not have internet browser on ps5 (but hey, we have settings for it ). No old decision was change ,such as MIC ON led off (?!) in what Universe do you exist?!
When will we get the ability to switch headphones audio to voice chat only/game audio from the quick menu?
@Titntin
Not everyone has a 4k display but will happily buy a PS5 as their next go to console. I only have a 4k tv for gaming because it came with my home otherwise i would have had to settle for 1440.
Things like folders should've been out from the get go seeing as how they are on ps4. Lazy. Sony really is repeating the ps3 days.
@ROBYER1 when the ps6 releases. Why wasn't folders there on day one. Ps4 has them. They are blowing it.
@PegasusActual93 Yes mate, I do agree, and even said this is great for those that need it. I would suggest that is a very small percentage of their user base, but its good to cater to them too.
Despite the petulance shown by the terminally not satisfied mob that seem to be the mainstay of this site these days, I like the ps5 front end and welcome the incremental changes that add a bit more functionality. Is it perfect.. absolutely not! But I prefer it to the series x ui, and in many ways, over windows too for the simple tasks necessary. I must admit though, I simply switch on and play games. If I wanted to use ps5 as a mutifunction device, maybe I'd be more critical, but right now it serves my purposes and looks good doing it.
@Titntin
I doubt it's a very small userbase. Less people have access to a 4K display than you think. Many PC gamers don't even use a 4K setup.
@PegasusActual93 of course its tiny, anyone who needed a 2k output wont have a ps5?
In terms of access, even in the states, who are notoriously slow in adopting new tv tech (compared with europe and the uk), 45% of households had a 4k set by 2021, and typically these would be the type of households that would also be likely to purchase a next gen console. Penetration is higher in europe and particularly in the uk.
Sony know how to sell units, and deliberately didn't rush to supply a 2k output as they knew so few potential customers were bothered.
Many pc gamers still play titles that are a decade or more old, and limit resolution to achieve competitive refresh rates. This idea that pc gamers are all high tech is very far from the truth. But even then, I play PC on a 3090 pc and use 2 monitors, a 32 incher for buisness use, and an lg c1 48 inch for entertainment. Both 4k.
That not having a 2k output has not hurt their sales is now a matter of record rather than speculation.
None the less, Im glad its an option for those that still need it.
This is easily their worst firmware update for the PS5 that I can remember other than the ones that just improve performance and such. It seems like the folders thing is a disappointment from the comments I read, and forcing the Activities onto the home screen is their dumbest move yet.
The UI has been behind the PS4's ever since launch aside from the hardware making it obviously faster, but one of the things it had going for it was that it at least looked pretty nice. Instead of fixing things that actually need fixed, their team continues to look like they were hired on the cheap from Craigslist. Activities were already easy enough to get to if you wanted to, but now instead of the nice backgrounds you would get when you went over to the game's icon, you are now greeted with a screenshot and an advertisement for the damn Activity they want you to complete. Why? At least just give us an option to disable that so we can get the UI back to at least being nice, even if it is still a mess overall. Unfortunately it's in this state after almost 2 years, so my faith in their team that handles the UI is at an all time low.
@sanderson72, PS4 10.0? Yea still no mention on this site about 10.0 ??? What is interesting is that both PS4 and PS5 received the same updates to zooming the web browser and remote play. Could it be the PS5 will have a real browser added?
The PS5 has an unofficial brower that needs tricks to use, and supposedly nobody uses the PS4 browser. So 9 years after the PS4 was released a really usefull zoom update was added to a web browser that nobody uses. Well i use the PS4 web browser and the improved zooming is very useful for me, thanks Sony.
they add gamelists BUT i cant search for a game and add it to a gamelist!!!!! or i cant add to gamelist from homescreen!!! so HAVE to go through my long list of games to seach for the game to add!! sony are thinking backwards!
@AFCC exactly!! what are sony doint!
@NoCode23 Yes, I use the browser too - very handy to pop over to the browser when trying to track down a quest in ESO, for example.
No need to fire up another device, just one click of the DS4's PS button and off we go!
So, the PS5 got the same zoom for the web browser that doesn't officially exist on it? Eh?
@sanderson72 yep , i don’t understand their logic with the ps5 , they had everything so right with the 4
Shame 'folders' really aren't. Was looking forward to using them to help with Extra lists and my backlog.
I mean, I still can...but so much less intuitive than on PS4.
@ReyMan_23 @blah01 @AFCC @RobN @wiiware @tomassi @McBurn @ZeD @ah41 @Chaotic_Goat 100% agreed, until we have folders on the actual home screen/main menu these are meaningless to me imo.
Just crazy how backwards they could be with this feature.
